Beautifully located on the southern edge of Lake Garda, Sirmione was subject of praise even from Catullus, a renowned roman poet. At the very edge of the cape are to be found the remains of a stately roman villa, which boasts a number of interesting archaeological relics, plus an attractive carving of rabbits.

Rocca Scaligera

Rocca Scaligera or Sirmione Castle, as it is also popularly known, was built by one of the great families of Verona - Della Scalla. This stunning moated castle is perched on a spit of land, and stabs the lake 2.5 miles. It position is peaceful yet very strategic. In the past, its location made it easy to defend from attacks.

Sirmione's ancient history is reflected at its best in the stately Roman Villa known also as "Grotte di Catullo". The remains of the villa are considered around 20 centuries old. It is believed that the construction of this marvellous villa started back in the first century. The villa today accommodates an Antiquarium, hosting records and photographic evidences of digs and restoration works, as well as some interesting excavation finds such as mosaics, bronze objects, and ceramics. Among those of interest are also some stucco fragments, sculptures and frescoes. In the vicinity of the villa is to be found the lovely Lombardian church of San "Pietro in Mavino". Its interior features middle age frescoes depicting Christ as a judge and a "Crucifixion".
